Creeping Red Lights

Do you honestly think it will get you anywhere any sooner?

Last night, after dropping my husband off, a car was doing this. It was so bad that they were practically in the intersection even before the light turned green. I've seen this before and I honestly think it's rediculous. Why do it? Why not just wait like everyone else and just get a fast start off the line instead of hanging out in the intersection before it's your turn? If someone decided to run the yellow light from the left, your front end would be gone. Then what? Would blame them for running the yellow and hitting you even though you were in the intersection? It seriously doesn't make any sense.

The thing I love most about these drivers? When they proceed to sit at the next green light instead....

Music Volume

In a place of business should not be so loud that you can't really hear the other end of a phone conversation!

This is my experience almost every. single. day. My boss finds the need to have the music on his computer so loud, than when clients call and i need to look at a file on his computer I need to completely turn off his music so I can hear what the client is saying.

Not cool!

Slow Walkers

Why oh why must you not cross the street in a straight line in the cross walk?

So on my way from work for lunch yesterday, I had to wait for what seemed like forever to turn because of the 2nd slowest walker known to man! And then she didn't even cross in the cross-walk so it took her even longer to cross the damn road! WTH?! Who does that?

The only other person I know that walks slower is an elderly gentleman who normally takes two steps, stops for 10 seconds, two more steps and another 10 seconds.... It's exhausting watching him move so slow. I actually feel bad for the guy. I don't often see him crossing the street so I'm not exactly sure if he picks up the pace or not...

But seriously, especially when its so busy, you should be crossing in the cross-walk unless you pick up the pace to get across faster, seriously!

Parking Lots

Last I checked, handicapped parking spaces don't magically turn into parking spaces for everyone...

Doing my grocery run last weekend, I noticed that out of 4 handicapped parking spaces in front of our local Safeway only one person parked in them actually had the appropriate placard to park in them. I couldn't help but notice that the other 3 vehicles didn't have any kind of marking that would allow them to park in these spaces. I kind of understand if you don't live here and it is your first time in this parking lot and parking in those spaces (which, in the winter when the ground markings are covered up by snow, there isn't a sign on a post to mark it as such in that situation) but people who do live here and parking in them is unacceptable.

I don't have any real need to be upset about this, but it does bother me when people park in these spaces when they clearly don't need to. These spaces are reserved for those who need them for whatever reason, not for your convenience so you don't have to park 5 spaces further in the parking lot when you're just waiting for someone or are too lazy to walk the extra 5 spaces. Pretty much every weekend I notice this occurance, but this winter it seems to be a more common occurance because of the snow covered markings. But just because you can't see the markings, doesn't mean they're no longer reserved for those who have an appropriate placard. The spaces closet to the doors are always for that purpose, it's never changed!

How would you feel if you needed that space but they were all taken by able bodied people???

Parallel Parking

if you don't fit in one space after 2 attempts, why would you then attempt a new space that's the same size?

that basically says it all. yesterday on my way to the local Tim Horton's after lunch for my afternoon coffee i witnessed someone try to pull into (or i guess it was actually back into) two different spots. the first one, they made at least one attempt, and i'm pretty sure a second. since that didn't seem to be happening, they drove up the road a little further and tried another spot. i watched them try at least 3 times, each time backing into the curb and not getting any further into the space with each attempt.

he eventually gave up, or he went around the block to make another pass at the parking spots, or to try to find another one he might fit. as i drove by the first spot he tried to get into, i wouldn't have even tried getting into it because it was too small. if you could move your vehicle sideways, then sure, its probably would've fit, but not when you can't go sideways (unless you have all day to spend doing a million 'S' turns like on Canada's Worst Driver). the second spot he tried was just as small as the first. between the two spots there was about 2 other spots that were bigger and probably worth the effort to park in them, but for some reason he drove right past them : /

Call Back ASAP...

So the Alberta Government sent enumerators door to door at the beginning of September to register citizens for the apparently upcomning Alberta election (which I had no idea was going to happen). We weren't home when they came to our house, but on the card they left, they told us to call them back a.s.a.p. Also on the card was a website you could go to to register instead of calling them back. So of course I went straight to the website since if I can do it online, I'm more likely to get it done.

Get this, the website wasn't even available to register online until Sept. 19! that was 2+ weeks from the day we got the notice. So this "a.s.a.p." that was written on our card wasn't exactly urgent seeing as how we had probably about a month to get it done. Gotta love the misuse of as soon as possible. Actually it irks me. Why state that unless it actually does need to be done a.s.a.p., as in it's needed right now.

They ended up coming by 2-3 weeks later to register us so I still don't know why they wrote that. And why let ppl know that you can go to their website when it's actually unavailable until a certain date? I was so close to calling the 1-800 number to complain about that, but I figured I wouldn't get anywhere with it anyway. But it was the principle of the matter that it wasn't urgent and you couldn't use their website. Why lead ppl on?

Pedestrian's Right Of Way

as long as they are in a cross walk and not going against trafic, don't they get right of way?

i learned many years ago when learning to drive that pedestrians have the right of way. unless of course they're J-walking, then they don't have right of way but you still have to stop and not hit them (as much as i wish i could for the fact they're not in a designated cross-walk and therefore don't have the right of way).

when a light turns green and you're turning, you have to yeild to pedestrians trying to cross the road. i appreciate having that priveldge as a pedestrian because lets face it, walking takes A LOT longer than driving so why shouldn't they have the right of way?

today i witnessed a vehicle making a left-hand turn gun it when the light turned green even though there was a pedestrian wanting to cross the road. the vehicle stopped in the middle of the intersection blocking the other lane of traffic (there wasn't any at the time) and then words were exchanged. not sure what was said and i really wished i turned my music and my windows down so i could hear just what was said. i do believe the pedestrian was getting mad at the car, but the exchange wasn't just a quick "watch where you're driving!".

always be on the lookout for pedestrians at cross-walks!

Road Rage

I think I've come across at least 3 things in the last few weeks that I really wanted to blog about but then never got around to it and now I can only remember one of them...

One day last week, I was going through the Timmies drive through to get my afternoon caffeine fix on a day I was feeling fairly sluggish and even on a good day, that parking lot is just an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately nothing happened to me that day, but I couldn't believe what one woman was doing while following an elderly man that was driving fairly slow around the parking lot.

Its a very tough parking lot to just whiz through because of drivers who don't pay enough attention when backing up or others whizzing through so fast that one second no ones coming so you decide its safe to back up and suddenly there's someone at your rear. My hubby has had someone back into his brand new truck not even 3 months after buying it because of a negligent driver.

Back to the story:
That day, the woman following this old man was so frustrated his slow driving that she was yelling obsenities out her window for everyone to hear as well as hammering on her horn as though it was going to get him to move faster. I've learned hat usually doesn't work when following the elderly. Granted I yell and scream in my vehicle when following slow drivers, but only when the windows are up so no one can hear me and usually only on the roads and not in parking lots (unless its unbelievably slow...). As soon as the gentleman pulled into a parking lot, she sped off. I was kind of hoping she would hit someone backing out of a parking space after that little show to put her in her place. She should be thanking him for making her slow down in that parking lot before something terrible happens, which I kind of hope does just teach her to slow down, but I doubt that would actually happen.

Hit and Run

Do unto others? Does that not come into play when in a hit and run?

The hubby and I were in Calgary for the weekend visiting family and I went with my cousin for some b-day shopping for her neice. We had already been to a few stores and everywhere seems so busy (makes me thankful we live in a small town and not a big city) and crowded. We got to Canadian Tire looking for rollerblades for her neice (of which they are apparently phasing out the selling of them in their stores, good to know for future purposes) and as we were coming into the parking lot, we witnessed someone bump into another vehicle.

Granted that vehicle was sitting in the fire lane in front of most stores without their hazard lights on and was unattended which they really shouldn't be doing in the first place, but that's besides the point. Another vehicle was trying to pull out of the parking lot hit that vehicle. I want to say they knew they did it, but it really seemed like they didn't know it happened. It's kind of hard to not know you hit a vehicle when you do it hard enough to see the vehicle move at least 6 inches, not to mention the sound that would be heard of plastic screeching as it rubs against plastic. He left a nice scratch in their bumper, backed up enough to reposition the car so they could get out without hitting anything else and drove away.

I was flabberghasted! i'd never actually seen this happen before. I've seen little taps where nothing happens, not even a spec of paint transfered from one vehicle to the other, but not one that bad.

We parked and when we walked up to the doors, we saw the guy who's vehicle got hit who was already getting told what happened by an employee that was also standing right there when the offending vehicle hit his SUV. Luckily the employee got the car's liscence plate number for the guy. I was in such shock that the car didn't even just drive ahead, stop, get out and at least leave a note on the vehicle he just hit with his information. I can't belive people do this! (actually I can since it happened to hubby a few years ago when someone hit his car in the middle of the night and took off... but that's a whole other rant)

What happened to common sense when you hit another person's vehicle. How would you feel if someone did that to you? Would you brush it off as no big deal? Doubt it!

Motorized Wheelchair Vs. Vehicle???

is survival of the fittest a thing of the past? or is it just ignorance? or maybe physics that some refuse to acknowledge?

last i checked, collisions involving one object considerably bigger/heavier than the other, the other didn't fair so well... but apparently motorized wheelchairs are exempt from this rule of thumb.

i was driving back to work from the local tim hortons when at a set of lights, said motorized wheelchair (for the remainder of this post will be called: MWC) was in the right-hand lane with it's left signal light on and a car on its left side going straight and the car on the other side of the intersection going straight as well. i think they knew the one car was beside them, but didn't even pay any attention to any other traffic, which there were at least 8 vehicles at that intersection at that time.
well the vehicle next to them goes through the intersection when the light turns green, but then instead of driving into the turning lane, proceeds to cut me and the vehicle on the other side of the light off and didn't even flinch! of course anyone would be too scared to even accidently hit a MWC so everyone just let it happen and no one tapped their horn or anything, myself included. i know the look on my face was disbelief that they actually do this knowing full well how much bigger a vehicle is compared to a MWC and yet still cut at least 2 vehicles off when not even having the right-of-way and didn't batt an eyelash.

do they think they have the right of way just because they have a MWC? or are there infact seperate rules that apply when they are on the road?

This is a First!

I came across something this week that totally blew my mind with how much sense it actually made in a world where a lot of things make little to no sense....

Tim Horton's newest garbage cans!

By far the best drive-thru garbage can idea I've ever seen! Haha.
I've always tried to avoid having to toss out garbage when going through a drive-thru for the simple fact that if I attempted to throw the garbage I would inevitably fail and it would fall to ground and I would either a) get out of the vehicle to pick it up and toss it out or b) leave it there and then feel guilty littering.
Who ever came up with this is a genius! It takes all the pressures of getting garbage in the garbage off of you. as long as you can toss it high and far enough, it will end up in the bin. You would have to a pretty shitty shot for you to miss the garbage with this invention. I've been hoping I would need to throw out garbage while in the drive-thru since I've become aware of this contraption but so far haven't had the need and am actually bummed about it, lol.

Blind Spots

So I guess checking your mirrors and blind spots is no longer a part of everyday driving? Seriously, how does one survive without due care while out and about everyday?

Yesterday, while on my way home for lunch, someone nearly clipped the front end of my new Terrain! Blasphemy I tell you!
I was heading north on a road I drive at least 4 times a day and decided to take the right lane (it's a 4 lane road...) because the vehicles in the left lane were moving a little slow for my taste. It didn't seem to bother anyone and it usually doesn't. If anything, all they do is either speed up to get ahead of me for their turn or they fall back and pull in behind me. Never had anyone actually tried to drive into the side of my vehicle....

....Until yesterday. If I had kept my speed she would've clipped the front end of my vehicle. Of course I slowed down because I don't want damage to my vehicle (who ever really wants that anyway, well I guess the woman who almost did it to me). I then honked my horn and it didn't even look like she was fazed one bit by what happened. I do admit, there has been a time or two where I've done the same thing, but if they honk their horn at me I at least acknowledge the fact that I was in the wrong and give them the 'sorry' wave. Isn't that the common sense thing to do???

One Way Streets

Apparently I've been slacking or there haven't been as many instances where I think WTF?.... I'll try to be more diligent in my posting. I promise!

As I was driving in the big city (Edmonton) yesterday after visiting my neice and sister-in-law, I took a road that was a one-way street. It's clearly marked at all intersections. Well I was driving down the road and a driver was coming from the other direction and swerved in front of me into a driveway. I thought it was kinda funny cuz I was just thinking two seconds earlier that I wanted to switch lanes and when I saw him I was glad I didn't. I did think to myself 'last I knew this was a one-way street, good thing I didn't change lanes since it's not...'
Then I noticed the reaction of the pedestrians on the sidewalk. They all had their hands in the air as though they were flabbergasted at what just happened. I realized that it is in fact a one-way street and that I should've laid on the horn when I saw him!
I just couldn't believe someone would drive that far down a one-way street when there's signs at every corner saying 'wrong way'.

Oldie but a Goodie

This post is for a past 'where was their common sense?'...

One day at lunch I was walking to the office from my car and when I got to the front of the building, I saw this:

Need I really explain this one?

Stop Sign Blindness?

Just today, I was driving around town doing my usual Sunday grocery trip and as I was pulling into the parking lot of Safeway, someone drove through a stop sign and waved at me!?! Coming into that parking lot, there is a 3-way stop. I stopped and noticed a van coming towards the intersection was going a little fast so I of course figured he wasn't going to stop. BINGO! I threw my hands up and gave him a 'what the f***' look and he just looked at me and waved at my like I was kind enough to let him go first through the intersection.

Is a red stop sign not good enough when all the surroundings are white from snow?!?!
